Import of SVG vector files
Scalable Vector Graphics means „manufacturing data right from the internet“. Wikipedia and many other sources offer a countless amount of vector files in the SVG format: logos, crests, symbols, graphics, icons, etc. The user can import these files directly into Cenon, edit them as desired and then just mill, engrave or cut them.
Embedded CNC commands
For many – especially industrial – manufacturing processes it is necessary to automatically initiate some specific procedures. For instance, if the lubrication or the suction unit have to be turned off during several machining steps. Or maybe an optic or acoustic signal should be triggered and the machine should switch into the halt mode until an acknowledgment of the user follows. Workpieces which have to be machined from different sides could be rotated by command with an appropriate fixing device.
For this and similar purposes, the user can embed CNC commands into his project which will be executed before and after the machining of each layer. So this is an easy way to process more complex procedures.
Support of vhf multi unit
A vhf milling machine can be made even more flexible with the new multi unit. Next to the oscillating tangential cutting head it is equipped with a universal head which can be used with the appropriate attachments for straight cutting, 45 degrees diagonal cutting and creasing. With the new version 4.0, Cenon now offers full support for this machining unit.
Cenon CCD: import of i-cut data and faster measuring
A RIP software is used for large-scale printing. These prints often should be milled or cut into shape afterwards. Here the i-cut format is a possible interface between the printer and the CNC machining system. These files do not only contain the positions of the register marks, but also the outline path. Prior to the optical workpiece recognition with Cenon CCD, these two elements/data sets will be directly imported to the according layers in Cenon. When the recognition of the register marks has been finished, Cenon can immediately start with accurately milling or cutting along the contours.
Another highlight of the new Cenon version 4.0 is that the measuring process with the camera has been considerably accelerated.
Overcuts with tangential cutting heads
When a tangential cutting knife is used, it is now possible to set defined over- or undercuts. This improves the cutting quality especially in thicker materials. One can exactly define this required additional or reduced cutting distance before and after a corner in the tools panel.
More improvements in version 4.0
- Single graphic objects can be excluded from machining. So one can for instance place the dimensions on the same layer as the elements which have to be machined.
- Absolute scaling possibility in the transform panel: in addition to the percentage scaling an exact end size can be specified.
- Raster images can be vectorized to lines and Bézier curves.
- The starting point of a path can be freely defined.
- During the path calculation different optimizations are performed for a remarkable increase in performance.
- Improvement of DXF import: now also 3D layers can be imported.
- „Return to parking position“ can now also be set from the position memory of the CAM panel.
- Background grid: every tenth line is thicker for a better overview.
Important improvements in former versions
Pick-out function remarkably improved [V 3.9.6]
Using the pick-out function finest three-dimensional engravings can be realized, for instance for manufacturing stamps, embossing tools or coins. By appropriately lifting a fine conic graver in corners and narrow areas, one gets a very precise elaboration of the surface.
Now the required machining depth can be reached stepwise with several dipping increments of the graver. So the material can be picked out quite deeply. For clearing larger areas, Cenon now uses a cylindric milling cutter which can work there in a very effective way. In order to enable a realistic estimation of the later results already in advance, the screen preview function observes the engraving width of the conic tool.
Cenon CCD: Workpiece recognition and transformation [V 3.9.1]
With the new function for optically capturing the edges of the workpiece itself, Cenon is now able to automatically recognize the position of printed circuit boards, front plates, printed plastic foil keyboards or similar items on the machine table. Furthermore, with this function the user can conveniently turn over the workpiece for machining its reverse side without additional position/register drillings.
On top of that, it is now possible to turn off the scaling of the output. Hence, the output paths will just be moved and rotated according to the positions of the register marks, but not be scaled. For instance when front plates or inlay works are machined, it is more important to have dimensional accuracy than an exact congruence with the (possibly distorted) printing. The exact size of the graphics will be retained then, just its position and rotation will be corrected.
Output of contour filling from inside to outside [V 3.9.1]
Contour fillings will now be processed for all objects from inside to outside. This increases the machining speed and avoids that a workpiece may loosen accidentally. Up to now, this has been only the case for circles. In case that fixing bars remain at an object while machining or if an angular approach is set, the respective areas will still be cleared from outside to inside.
Administration of different work environments [V 3.9.1]
A work environment on the desktop can be saved and loaded again. The arrangement of projects and documents will be saved as “snapshot” with name. So when the program will be started again, either all previous jobs can be restored or the user can revert to a different previously saved work environment.
Optical Workpiece Recognition with Cenon CCD [V 3.9.0]
A common annoyance – a workpiece has been elaborately printed and then the contours will not be hit exactly when the workpiece is milled later on. In the worst case, the whole plate has to be discarded then. Reasons for this are inaccuracies of the printing process and while manually adjusting the workpiece on the CNC machining system. The new module Cenon CCD offers a remedy here by optically measuring the printed workpiece and independently adjusting the machining paths according to the captured positions of the register marks.
Relief output to any element with colour gradient [V 3.9.0]
Cenon’s relief function is a practical alternative to an elaborated 3D design. Now it can be applied to all kinds of colour gradients. Whether ornaments for furniture production or especially tapered edges – this function offers manifold possibilities.
Angular Approach [V 3.9.0]
The tool can now be steplessly lowered in a spiral movement along the output path into the workpiece. As this is performed with a constant speed, the whole machining process not only becomes faster, but also smoother as unaesthetic dipping marks are avoided. This facilitates also a longer endurance of the tool. Like all features of Cenon, this function is easy to use and requires just a single input field for setting the approach angle.
Arrival at computer modernity
Cenon for the operating system OpenStep is only available up to version 3.9 as the further development of this platform had been abandoned many years ago. So an OpenStep computer has become a more and more isolated application in each company. Users upgrading their OpenStep version to Cenon 4.0 will get a Mac included in their delivery. So they can use a modern operating system which is fit for the future and offers an admittedly high ease of use – for Cenon and many other applications.
On top of all that the updates contain regular improvements regarding the operation, display, path calculation, performance, output... To name them in detail would go beyond the scope of this document.
The price for the Cenon upgrade from the preceding version 3.9 under Apple Mac to version 4.0 is €580, the upgrade for Cenon versions with CCD module for the optical workpiece recognition costs €980. The upgrade price from version 3.8 under Apple Mac to version 4.0 is €680. Upgrade prices for former Cenon versions and OpenStep versions on request.
